Bio

THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCESS

Physical Description
An anemically pallid and twig-like silhouette with the simultaneous gift of height lends to Selena's awkward, somewhat starved appearance. The girl's lengthy black hair often hides her large, piercing eyes, which are of a wintry onyx and are nearly always adorned with deep shadows beneath them (which contrast with her snowy skin). Selena despises her long nose, secretly wishing that it was one of the cute, straight noses of the witches in fashion magazines; it is, like many of her physical attributes, an unwanted gift from her father. Her nose's slight crookedness is not genetic, but rather the result of infuriating Mr. Snape one too many times. Though her youthful shape is awkward, the girl's movements are fluid, with a hidden grace that is reminiscent of her deceased mother.

Personality and History
Though most would agree that Selena is neither beautiful, nor particularly concerned with aesthetics, the girl is notably intelligent and sagacious. She not only comprehends the vast amount of knowledge she swallows daily from the castle's generous library, but savors it. Consciousness is her best friend, the most cherished part of her dark adolescence.

Selena thinks little of the majority of the castle's inhabitants: in her eyes, neither the curriculum nor those who study it are worthy. Being unable to hold an intriguing conversation on a regular basis, the girl prefers to keep to herself. She rarely speaks with anyone, and when she does, her words are calculated and weighed with meaning. Also, if the chance insult a student or indirectly bring down a teacher presents itself, Selena cannot help but indulge.

Though she constantly makes critical remarks of those around her, whether to their faces or in her mind, a tinge of jealousy haunts the youth's disposition. She loathes many people simply for their charismatic auras, their popularity, and their wealth, none of which the serpent has ever known. There is also a reserved admiration for the more glamorous members of her serpentine house. Selena would never admit as much aloud, but she yearns to belong with the 'it crowd' of the Slytherin common room; she is hypnotized by their sinister allurement.

Selena's mother, Eileen Prince Snape, though she married a Muggle man, never quite escaped the traditional prejudices that have accompanied the children of Salazar Slytherin for centuries. Selena was not immune to hearing such words as "Mudblood" slip from her mother's tongue over the years. Selena's discriminatory beliefs, which began at a young age, have been cultivated to an extreme during the girl's education at Hogwarts.

It is ironic that Selena should abhor "bad blood", as she herself is a half-blood. Covertly referring to herself as The Half-Blood Princess, Selena is simultaneously every bit and not at all a princess: she is educated and mannered, and possesses a certain refinement that is befitting of the Slytherin, but at the same time, she lacks the charisma, worldliness, and finance of a typical royal being. The name is both a pun on her mother's maiden name of Prince, and a satirical approach to her tainted blood status. Like Tom Riddle, perhaps, Selena believes this self-selected title to be more fitting than the one bestowed upon her at birth. Whether it be a bitter gesture, a bold one, or just plain wit, she openly acknowledges one of her largest "faults" in this name.

Selena's Muggle father, Tobias Snape, also lends to her prejudices against muggles and those of muggle heritage: the man lost his wife's old family money and prestigious Wizarding name when Selena was only an infant. He beat Eileen frequently and harshly, until she passed away when Selena was ten years old. Tobias still attempts to control Selena herself through physical punishment, though it becomes increasingly challenging as the girl matures in her magical ability.

Before her death, Eileen taught Selena very much about the Wizarding world, particularly about the magical branch of potion-making. Selena knew an abundance of potions and spells upon her arrival to Hogwarts Castle. Her awareness and obsessions with the Dark Arts has not gone unnoticed by teachers and peers.

Like any young girl, Selena is not above mindless infatuation. She despises the physical attraction she feels to students around her, and secretly yearns for love and acceptance, most of which disappeared with her mother.

Selena is, overall, sharp, misanthropic, and extremely ambitious. She is determined to rise above the realms of hypocrisy and superficiality, to never trust or depend on another human, to defeat the life into which she was born. Unfortunately, this becomes increasingly difficult. The vulnerable girl is discreetly attracted to the powerful and beautiful inhabitants of the Slytherin House. She wishes to belong, and is prone to falling into such temptation, even if it should bring society's condemnation and self-betrayal upon her.
